On the flight to Vancouver, I was window-bound and managed to speak with a middle-aged Canadian mum with her entire family, homeward bound from a summer vacation in Disneyworld, Florida. Well, she wasn’t 100% Canadian but actually an immigrant from Hong Kong, ever since she was a little girl at 8 years old.
This conversation was informational and somehow nice, because of many things. For one, she educated me on the immigrantion scene in Vancouver – one would have thought that the major proportion of these people came from Hong Kong and mainland China, but no, it was apparently the South Asians, mostly the Indians, who have actually surpassed the Chinese population! She was also a marketing person who specialized in inter-cultural marketing of products to the Chinese population in Canada, and she shared how hard it was in the field to convince companies to adopt different branding strategies following a re-assessment of consumer needs etc. All I can say was she was really an amiable lady, and in fact, she did look a little like Prof Tan, and that made her cross-cultural perspective even more significant!
We touched down at 11pm in Vancouver, officially stepping onto Canadian soil after almost 32 hours of travelling! It was tiring, of course, and we were seriously jetlagged. But like what Vicki said, it’s all about perspectives - I have gained another day in my life (I am still experiencing 25 August after all this time), and have now landed in a good cosy hostel with my friends. And tomorrow, we shall be driving out and all the way across the Straits (via the BC Ferries), to explore Vancouver Island.
To Vicki and Chris, I really loved whatever you both wrote to me. Perhaps you two will be the only ones who will bother reading these long-winded posts to every precision, but really, it was what you all have said/written to me that really sparks off the many thoughts in these 2 days. :)
Our many baggages and the YWCA Downtown Vancouver Hostel.
