At times I still find myself slipping into the "when will I ever have time to do the things I've set out to do on exchange" mood. My goals for exchange were simple - to have personal time and space to reflect, to pen down and share these thoughts via my blog, to read up my articles on consulting and complete career-management inventories, so as to adapt well to the all-familiar feel/fear of job-hunting for final-semester SMU students, since there is no time for me to rest at all before the term kicks in.
So well, I'm really thankful that I'm only doing 3 modules here, so at least I still have some time to myself. But having said that, I also do not intend to be slip-shod over my work, as each course is likeable and motivating in its own way!
FIN 3270 - Personal Financial Planning
Finance, urgh. But this course intrigues me because it is not a typical finance module - in fact, I've heard from a local that it's supposed to be quite manageable and easy, which makes me super relieved! Haha. Anyhow, my intent of taking this course is to understand and learn how to plan for my own future as well, particularly cos financial planning is always essential and even more so since I'll be drawing my first paycheck pretty soon (I hope). So yep, I believe I'll benefit greatly from this course at the end of it, making me more motivated to learn too.
(Anyway, fortunately I brought my financial calculator here cos it's quite essential for the course! I actually worked quite hard preparing for class last week, went through my FNCE101 and other notes to make sure I remember my stuff! *beams* haha.)
ENTR 3100 - Small Business Management
Other than the very tedious projects, mini-projects and multiple deadlines for this course, the Prof is rather charming and humourous, making discussions very enjoyable. I think he finds my SMU name-tag very nice and unique too, cos the locals just use white paper to write their names on it. Haha.. but lessons are indeed enjoyable, especially when they are just 1hr 15min long, so it's easier to concentrate and look forward to the end of class too!
FILM 1290 - Art of the Film
Really one of my most eye-opening modules in my undergraduate life. My Prof is a film critic by profession, and has vast experience in this industry for decades - producing, editing and directing short films on his own. Although I'm just taking this as an Arts elective, I've really learnt to appreciate what I can benefit from the course as it not only opens my perspectives to what/how directors want to portray in their movies, but also exposes me to cinematographic techniques like lens position, length of shot, camera movement, music and editing, as well as the use of literary forms to convey and enhance meaning! It's somehow tedious that I'll have to look out for every single detail and try to find meaning in every scene whenever I watch a film in class, but now I know I'll never look at or respond to films the same way again.
Well, so much so for the first week of class. Apart from the above, I'm just surprised that classrooms here still use OHPs and chalkboards. It's really uncomfortable at times! :(
